An Grianan Theatre

An Grianán opened in October 1999 and rapidly earned a reputation for artistic excellence and accessibility. Now established as an integral part of Donegal’s cultural landscape, An Grianán has worked in close partnership with other key players in the county and nationally to invigorate and develop the local arts scene. Boasting a 383 capacity auditorium, this state of the art facility is committed to presenting the best in drama, comedy, music and much, much more. For a dream that took over a decade to become a reality, An Grianán theatre has certainly made its stamp on the arts scene, not only at a local level in Donegal, but nationally with many artists keen to play the intimate yet lively venue. The Award ceremony was hosted by 2FM’s Paddy McKenna and saw performances from Kodaline, singer/songwriter Gavin James, I Am The Cosmos and Donegal’s own Eve Murtagh: ‘Eve is part of a wealth of talent in the North West making inroads into the national and international scene which includes Derry talent Soak and Downing’s Rosie Carney…We also have some great gigs lined up ahead including The Henry Girls, Cara Dillon and Winter Mountain, Kieran Goss, and The Webb Sisters who are part of Leonard Cohen’s band explained Daithi Ramsay, Marketing Manager of An Grianán.

Back in 1987 two members of the North West Theatre Project went to see Brian Friel to enlist his support for the creation of the theatre. His advice was “when a preacher comes to town first he builds his congregation, then he builds his church”. Looking at past programmes and future events set to take place at An Grianán, Donegal can proudly say it has its 'congregation' and its 'church'.
